The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team kept its perfect Arrowhead Conference record intact with a 25-18, 25-16, 22-25, 25-15 victory at Black Hawk on Tuesday evening.

The Chargers (19-5 overall, 5-0 Arrowhead), in search of their first conference championship since 1990, are the league’s only unbeaten team as they reached the midway point of their Arrowhead schedule.

Josalyn Owens (Lincoln) and Peyton Bowman (West Prairie) each had 13 kills to lead the Sandburg attack, which finished with a .303 hitting percentage. Hannah Thompson (West Prairie) added 12 kills, 16 digs and two aces for the Chargers.

Setter Cora Vyhnanek (West Prairie) had 40 assists, 15 digs and matched Thompson for the team lead with a pair of aces. Jordan Price (Fulton) totaled nine kills and a team-best 2.5 blocks, and libero Haley Stevenson (Galesburg) picked up a Sandburg-leading 21 digs.

Sandburg, which was among “Others Receiving Votes” for the second straight week in the NJCAA Division II rankings that came out prior to Tuesday’s match, will make its longest trip of the regular season this weekend as it plays in the Cowley Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Arkansas City, Kan. Three of the Chargers’ four opponents this weekend appear in this week’s rankings: No. 6 Cowley (Kan.), No. 11 Northeast Oklahoma A&M and No. 14 Iowa Central.

SCHEDULE NOTE: Sandburg’s matched scheduled for tonight at home against Kishwaukee has been postponed because the Kougars will not be able to field a full team. A possible makeup date has yet to be announced.
